Chapter Eleven

I had a feeling about Dan. It wasn’t that I thought he might have killed his father, but that maybe he knew more than he was admitting to. I wasn’t exactly sure what that something was, but I was hoping I could find out. And I hoped he really wasn’t his father’s killer. I can’t think of anything more tragic than a child killing their parent, unless it was the reverse, a parent killing their child.

I pulled up to the feedstore and parked. I knew they sold pet food, so I decided to head back to the aisle with the cat and dog food. I glanced around as I headed back, hoping to run into Dan, but all I saw were a few other customers doing some shopping. The Pumpkin Hollow Feedstore carried a surprising variety of cat food. There were the high-end grain-free varieties as well as the supermarket varieties of cat food in stock. They also had a number of different vitamins, treats, cat toys, and collars.

I picked up a red collar with a little silver bell on it and looked it over. I wondered how Boo would take to wearing a collar since he had never worn one for as long as I had owned him. There were also a variety of soft brushes and a grooming glove. I picked up a fun looking wand that had a string with feathers attached to it, and one of the brushes. I hadn’t intended to spend a lot of money on Boo, but these were essentials.

Next I headed over to the bags of cat food. Boo was finicky, and even though he usually attacked his food when it came from a fresh bag, by the time he’d eaten it for three or four days, he was tired of it. I had been considering rotating different brands and flavors to keep him happy, so why not pick up a couple of bags while I was here?

“Hi Mia,” Dan said from behind me.

He startled me and I jumped a little. “Hi Dan,” I said, nodding. “I keep forgetting that you carry cat food here, and since I just remembered that today, I thought I’d stop in and see what I could find.”

“We carry quite a few varieties, and if there’s anything you want that we don’t carry, I can always order it.” He folded his arms across his chest. “I have a cat named Nelly. She loves that brand.” He nodded indicating the bag I was standing in front of.

“Oh? What color is your cat?”

“She’s a calico. Her underside is white, and the other colors are on her back and sides. She has the greenest eyes I’ve ever seen on a cat.”

“She sounds beautiful,” I said. “I have a black cat named Boo.”

He chuckled. “Boo? That’s a cute name.”

“Thanks,” I said. “Since he’s a black cat and we live in a Halloween themed town, how could I name him anything else?”

“You’ve got a point there,” he said. “Is there anything I can help you with?”

“I’m really just browsing right now.
